Hi Mark: I have a copy of the original 1936 Zuse patent application that I had translated into English for my Origins book. (It took some finding - some of my Zemanek documents had strayed into the middle of the Zuse documents, and so had obscured them! :-) It is a type-written document, on the letterhead of Zuse’s patent attorney Dr.-Ing. Bruno Wolf, Berlin Charlottenberg 5, Kantstrasse 85, dated 9.4.36 (i.e. 9 April 1936). It is some twenty or so pages in length. However I should warn you that some of the pages are barely legible (though could probably be deciphered by someone who knows German - which I don’t). I could scan this document for you if you wish. (I have about two inches thick of documents about Zuse’s work, including a number of patents and patent applications, some pre-war, immediately some post-war, together with several typescripts from him. My plan is that this material will be added to the archive of my files held in the Special Collections section of Newcastle University Library. This already holds all the extensive correspondence that I was involved in while compiling Origins.) Hi Mark: I’ve scanned and will separately email you the German original of the 11.4.1936 patent application contained in Origins. The other patent-related documents I have are: 1. Rechenmaschine - patent application Z23 624 IX b/42 m - 24.12.1936 2a. General remarks to the Zuse Patent Application Z391 (from IBM, dated Oct. 14, 1975)) “This application was filed with the German Patent Office June 16, 1941 . . . the application was finally rejected on July 14, 1967. The rejection was based on obviousness and lack of novelty. The patent application refers to a program controlled binary relay computer including a memory for storing values in predetermined storage cells, further an arithmetic unit which works in floating point mode, and a programming unit for automatically controlling the operation process following a predetermined computing plan represented by a punch tape carrying coded program instructions . . .” To this is attached a typed document: BUNDESPATENTGERICHT Aktenzeichen 17w 296/62/ Beschluss [Resolution?] In Sachen der Patentanmeldung Z391 IXc/42m (11 pages) 2b. The DEPATISnet website doesn't list a Zuse patent with an application date in April 1936 (on a quick "beginners search", anyway :-) The 9 May 1936 application that Con referred to is different - the issued patent was for a "Mechanisches Schaltglied" ("Mechanical Switching Element"?) Don’t think this tidbit has appeared on the list...A few years back there was a rock musical in London called Loserville. It’s now closed, though American high schools are picking it up. Dear Ulf, dear all, As some of you may know, the Z4 ended up its operational existence on the French side of the Rhine, when the Zurich ETH sold it in 1955 to the Institut des recherches techniques in Saint-Louis (ISL), a military lab devoted to R&D on accoustics and shock waves. I don't know if Konrad Zuse himself came to Saint-Louis, but the French and German scientists working at ISL participated regularly in the meetings of the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik (GAMM). I can enquire whether ISL kept archives from K. Zuse. He mentioned it without much detail to me when we met in 1990.
