The Digital Revolution: Nursing in the Age of Technology Exhibition runs 16 September 2026 - 2 March 2027 Royal College of Nursing, 20 Cavendish Square, London W1G 0RN An exhibition exploring the changes, choices and challenges of the digital revolution in health care - from Florence Nightingale as one of the first data scientists to the futuristic machines of early Intensive Care units. The display will explore how we navigate healthcare in the digital age and recognise that care is always uniquely human. For information about our opening hours and associated events visit www.rcn.org.uk/whatson<http://www.rcn.org.uk/whatson> or view the exhibition online: The Digital Revolution: Nursing in the Age of Technology | Library | Exhibitions | Royal College of Nursing<https://www.rcn.org.uk/library-exhibitions/Digital-Nursing-2026> 'Into the Ring': The Rise of Trade Unionism in Nursing RCN History of Nursing Annual Lecture Thursday 29 October, doors open 6pm (talk starts 6.30) Royal College of Nursing, 20 Cavendish Square, London W1G 0RN Professor Sioban Nelson is a well-known nursing historian and policy scholar. In this talk, she will be presenting material from her current book project, "Object matters: A General History of Nursing Through Material Culture". The book tackles the history of nursing through a series of objects from thirteenth-century hospital seals, to steamer trunks and boxing gloves. "Into the ring: Industrial legislation, nursing professional associations and the rise of trade unionism among nurses in Denmark, Canada and the United Kingdom in the 1970s" will take as its starting point the boxing gloves of the prominent Danish nursing leader, Kirsten Stallknecht. It will examine rising militancy among nurses in the 1970s, and the diverse ways the UK's Royal College of Nursing, Denmark's Danish Nurses Organization, and Canada's Registered Nurses Association of Ontario navigated the rapidly changing industrial climate of the era and the consequences for the nursing profession. Tickets are free and include light refreshments. Book at: https://www.rcn.org.uk/news-and-events/events/history-of-nursing-lecture-in… Data, Statistics and the Rise of 'Normal' Health (online event) Tuesday 19 November, 6pm The history of data is also the surprising history of how the very notion of the normal came about and how it shaped us all, often while entrenching oppressive values. Before the 19th century, the term was rarely associated with human behaviour. Sarah Chaney explores how, from the 1830s, this branch of science really took off, with a proliferation of statistics: IQ tests, sex studies, a census of hallucinations and more. Book your free place here: Data, Statistics and the history of 'Normal' health | Event | Royal College of Nursing<https://www.rcn.org.uk/news-and-events/events/data-stats-normality-101126> Digital Inclusion and Digital Exclusion: A History of Nursing Informatics (online event) Monday 30 November, 5.30pm Nursing informatics emerged from the first computers in health care settings in the 1960s, becoming an established field in the 1980s. Paula Procter, a key figure in the use of information technology in nursing since 1979, talks about important moments from her career. Meanwhile, Amanda Jackson will reflect on the growing challenges in community care arising from digital poverty. How can we make today's digital world more equitable? by Hintz, Eric 23 Sep '26

23 Sep '26

**Hi SIGCIS– Check out the Lemelson Center’s call for fellowship applications, due October 15, 2026. Over the years we’ve had several SIGCIS members join us at research fellows and NMAH has great collections in the history of computing such as the Ralph Baer papers<https://sova.si.edu/record/NMAH.AC.0854>, the Grace Murray Hopper collection<https://sova.si.edu/record/NMAH.AC.0324>, the Computer Oral History Collection<https://sova.si.edu/record/NMAH.AC.0196>, the Video Game Pioneers Oral History collection<https://sova.si.edu/record/nmah.ac.1498>, and many other gems. Best, Eric Hintz Research Fellowships from the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center (apps due 15 Oct 2026) Through its fellowship programs, the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation<https://invention.si.edu/> supports research projects that present creative approaches to the study of invention and innovation in American society. Projects may include (but are not limited to) historical research and documentation projects resulting in publications, exhibitions, educational initiatives, documentary films, or other multimedia products. Collections: Our programs provide access to the expertise of the Institution's research staff<http://americanhistory.si.edu/about/staff> and the vast invention and technology collections of the National Museum of American History (NMAH). The NMAH Archives Center<http://americanhistory.si.edu/archives/collections> holds the archival papers of several inventors including Earl Tupper (Tupperware), Joseph Friedman (flexible straw), Robert Kearns (intermittent windshield wiper), Leo Baekeland (Bakelite synthetic plastic), Marion O’Brien Donovan (household inventions), Jacob Rabinow (optical character recognition), Grace Murray Hopper (software), Ralph Baer (video games), Patricia Bath (cataracts treatments), InBae Yoon (laparoscopic surgery), and Van Phillips (prosthetic limbs). The museum also holds the technical artifacts and business records of several corporations and small entrepreneurial firms, including the Western Union Telegraph Company (telecommunications), the Mergenthaler Linotype Company (printing), Jogbra, Inc. (sports apparel), and Small Beginnings (neonatal care). In addition, the NMAH Library offers long runs of historical technology serials like Scientific American and American Machinist, and the American Trade Literature collection<http://library.si.edu/trade-literature>, which includes 300,000 catalogs, technical manuals, and advertising brochures for some 30,000 firms, primarily from 1880-1945. For a comprehensive catalog of objects, manuscripts, images, and research materials available at the NMAH (and other Smithsonian units), see http://www.collections.si.edu/. Topics: The Lemelson Center invites all applications covering the broad spectrum of research topics in the history of technology, invention, and innovation. The Center especially encourages proposals that align with one (or more) of its strategic research and programmatic areas, including (1) projects that illuminate inventors or technologies associated with under-represented groups; (2) projects that explore the broader ecosystem of individuals and institutions that support inventors, including inventors' professional organizations; angel investors, venture capitalists, and financiers; incubators and entrepreneurial coaches; patent agents and IP attorneys; product designers, manufacturers, and marketers; and bankruptcy-liquidation specialists; (3) projects exploring innovation in sports and sports technology; (4) projects that explore research-based activities in invention education, educational psychology, or learning theory; or (5) projects exploring the interconnections between art, invention, and the human experience. Our definition of “art” is broad, encompassing visual art, photography, music, dance, etc. The Arthur Molella Distinguished Fellowship supports the work of an experienced author or senior scholar (associate/full/emeritus professor level or equivalent) from the history of technology, science and technology studies, business history, museum studies, STEAM education, or an allied field. Smithsonian staff are not eligible. The specific arrangement is flexible: the Molella Fellow may use the funds as a sabbatical supplement; for several short-duration visits; for a virtual appointment focused on research and writing; or for a series of lectures leading to a major publication. The stipend is $35,000. Funds may be used flexibly to support teaching buyouts, travel for several short-term visits, living expenses for longer residences up to seven months, and related research expenses. Applications are due 15 October 2026. Dates are flexible; appointed fellows may begin their residencies on/after 1 June 2027 through 31 May 2028. For application procedures and additional information, see http://invention.si.edu/arthur-molella-distinguished-fellowship. The Lemelson Center Fellowship Program annually awards 2 to 3 fellowships to pre-doctoral graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and other professionals who have completed some advanced training (usually an MA or JD, but please inquire if you have questions). Undergraduates and Smithsonian staff should not apply. Fellows are expected to reside temporarily in the Washington, D.C. area and participate in the Center's activities. Fellowship tenure is based upon the applicants’ stated needs (and available funding) up to a maximum of ten weeks. AI & History Conference
by Dag Spicer 08 Sep '26

08 Sep '26

Hello SIGCIS Friends! Thought you might find this of interest. Hybrid -- “A Select Number of Sessions Will be Streamed Online.” Free to attend. See you there! Dag "This is not simply a conference about adopting the latest AI tools. It is an opportunity to think critically about the growing role of artificial intelligence and computational methods in historical research, teaching, archives, and the discipline." [American Historical Association | Everything Has A History.jpeg]<https://historians.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00NzU4MjQwJnA9MSZ1PTM5Mzg1MDM3My…> You‘re Invited: AI and History Conference 2026 What does AI mean for historians, and what does it mean for the historical discipline? Johns Hopkins University and the American Historical Association invite historians, educators, graduate students, archivists, and others interested in historical practice to join us October 15–16 in Baltimore for the AI and History Conference 2026<https://historians.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00NzU4MjQwJnA9MSZ1PTM5Mzg1MDM3My…>. Visit the Conference Website<https://historians.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00NzU4MjQwJnA9MSZ1PTM5Mzg1MDM3My…> This is not simply a conference about adopting the latest AI tools. It is an opportunity to think critically about the growing role of artificial intelligence and computational methods in historical research, teaching, archives, and the discipline. What can these methods make possible? Where do they fall short? How do historians evaluate AI-generated results against historical evidence? What new methodological, ethical, pedagogical, and professional questions do these technologies raise? And how do we ensure that computational approaches are rigorous, sustainable, and grounded in historical practice? The conference brings together historians working at different levels of engagement with computational methods, from those just beginning to explore these approaches to scholars already incorporating them into their research. Sessions will address topics including AI and archival research, text mining, OCR, spatial and network analysis, teaching with AI, evidentiary standards, copyright and intellectual property, graduate training, publishing, and the future of computational history. Whether your views on AI are enthusiastic, skeptical, or curious, whether you are already using AI or simply trying to understand what it means for our discipline, there is a place for you in this conversation. The goal of this event is not to tell historians what to think about AI. It is to give historians the opportunity to think together and to shape what comes next for the discipline. A select number of sessions will be streamed online, with access details provided closer to the conference. Online-only registration is free for all registration categories.
