Dear friends - The SHOT Annual meeting is right around the corner - October 24-27 - so I thought I’d write with a few reminders and announcements for SIGCIS-related events. NB: online registration is now closed, but onsite registration will be available in Milan. It is an exceptionally large and fascinating program! Please bring some extra Euros to the Friday SIGCIS lunch meeting. We’ll be mixing it up this year by running a book raffle, in the place of our traditional book auction. Laine Nooney and Con Diaz are in charge, and we’re depending, as always, on book donations from our members! If you plan to bring a book or two, it will help us tremendously if we know the title and author in advance—so please do some planning and then send that information to me. In addition, we will once again feature some new titles donated by our friends at MIT Press. Very keen to get contributions from people who've lived through earlier AI booms, whether as programmer or the programmed...! *Artificial Intelligence and its Discontents* Call for Papers for a special issue of *Interdisciplinary Science Reviews* Guest Editor: Colin Shunryu Garvey, Fellow, Human-Centered AI Institute, Stanford University Journal Editor: Willard McCarty, Professor emeritus, Dept. of Digital Humanities, King’s College This is increasingly the Age of AI. Artificial Intelligence, the suite of technologies that make machines capable of performing tasks considered “intelligent” when performed by people, is colonizing an increasing number of domains, from Internet search and social media to the natural sciences and even criminal sentencing. AI may soon become ubiquitous; coextensive with civilization itself, a taken-for-granted feature of modernity like electricity or running water. But this does not mean that all is well: AI has, and has always had, its *discontents*; those who doubt, question, challenge, reject, reform and otherwise reprise “AI” as it is practiced and promoted. With the hope of scaffolding deeper understandings of both the epochal transformations being wrought by AI technologies and the range of responses these changes, this special issue of *Interdisciplinary Science Reviews *will bring together reflections from practitioners, assessments from scientists in fields transformed by AI, and historically-informed accounts of AI and its critics, both past and present, in order to capture something of the significance of this historical moment for future generations. A few questions worth pondering might be: · Who are AI’s discontents and how have they contended with the technology’s advance? · How has AI been challenged in areas from scientific knowledge production to daily life? · What is being left out of the increasingly dominant “machine learning” paradigm, and why? · Where is the line drawn between “AI” and everything else, and who patrols that boundary? · Why has criticism regarded differently in AI than in other technosciences? Contributions can range in length from reflective contributions of only a few pages to full research articles (maximum of 8000 words including citations and references, in most cases). The deadline for abstracts is *November 15, 2019*. Final papers will be collected *January 15, 2020*. The issue will be finalized by mid-March and sent to press for a projected *June 2020 *release. Proposal Deadline for the Charles Babbage Institute's "Just Code" Symposium a week away (Oct. 15th)

Dear Colleagues, Wanted to send a reminder that the deadline for paper proposals (300 to 450 word abstract and 2pp. CV) to CBI's Symposium "Just Code: Power, Inequality, and the Political Economy of IT" is only 8 days away, October 15th (midnight CST). The event itself is May 8-9, 2020. We hope many of you will consider proposing a paper (or otherwise attending). We encourage (and would appreciate) your forwarding this to anyone you think might be interested. *Just Code: Power, Inequality, and the Global Political Economy of IT* Just Code is a one and a half day CBI symposium/workshop on how code—construed broadly, from software routines to bodies of law and policy—structures and reinforces power relations. It will explore the often invisible ways that individuals and institutions use software, algorithms, and computerized systems to establish, legitimize, and reinforce widespread social, material, commercial, and cultural inequalities and power imbalances. The event will also examine how individuals, unions, political organizations, and other institutions use code to fight for equality and justice. Other major themes include the (pre-)history of code/algorithmic thinking; code as means of concealment or secret communications; codes of conduct in business, governance, and culture related to IT and its institutions (local and global exploitation through imperialism, human rights violations, and environmental degradation); and codes of ethics in information technology. The papers will draw from across the humanities and qualitative social sciences, including disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, science and technology studies, geography, and communications. We anticipate that papers (collectively) will examine a wide range of themes in the global business, cultural, social, legal, and environmental history of the political economy of information technology. Papers will be pre-circulated (among presenters) and we have plans to publish revised papers (after editorial and peer review) as an edited volume in the Springer History of Computing Book Series. Proposals should include a two-page curriculum vitae and a 300 to 450 word abstract (as a single PDF) that highlights the key argument(s), connection of the paper to the symposium's topic/themes, and a description of core methods/sources. SIGSALY photos?

Dear Colleagues, Can anyone recommend sources to get images of the SIGSALY cryptography machine, preferably from the 1940s (as opposed to a re-staging years later)? I’ve tried contacting the Crypto Museum, no answer, and there are images on Wikipedia of imperfectly documented provenance. However, I also think I’ve seen a few figures around over the years that aren’t circulating online—I can’t quite remember where, though. I’d like to find hi-res images that I can get good and solid clearance to republish. Tips? Histories of Computing in Eastern Europe volume now available

Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to announce that the proceedings volume from our Histories of Computing in Eastern Europe workshop in Poznan has been published by Springer. Details are available on their website: https://www.springer.com/cn/book/9783030291594 The Proceedings come from an event organized by IFIP Working Group 9.7 at the last IFIP World Congress. WG 9.7 is composed of industry professionals, historians, archivists, and others with an interest in the history of computing broadly defined. The contents of the volume are divided into six parts: 1. EASTERN EUROPE. The papers in this section offer new glimpses into the history of computing in Armenia, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. For instance, Szabo offers a compelling portrait of a computing class conducted with a chalkboard in Hungary. Armenian Computers: First Generations Sergey B. Oganjanyan, Valery V. A highlight of these papers is co-authored by the children of two great names in the USSR: Anatoly Kitov and Victor Glushkov. They challenge the notion that Soviet computer science was a failure because it did not result in an ARPA-style national network. Kitov also details his own work in the first article to discuss Soviet control programs that monitored data transfer between multiple terminals for collaborative work.
