Dear list members, I have realized - a bit late - that there is a CFP that I didn't notice posted here and that some of you might find interesting, for the History of Games conference. This year's topic is Transnational Game Histories: http://www.history-of-games.com/cfp/ and the conference will take place in Krakow, Poland, in late May. The majority of this conference has traditionally focused on computer and video games. The deadline is a week from now, on January 13, but might be extended. I'm on the conference's steering committee so I'll be happy to answer any questions! I'm pasting the full CFP below. Jagiello?ska 15), Jagiellonian University, Krakow The theme of the conference, Transnational Games Histories, reflects a changing awareness in the influence of games throughout time and space. Following from earlier calls for a broader and more inclusive approach to the histories of games (Therrien, 2012), games do not belong to one country, nation state or region. Through formal and informal networks (Wasiak, 2015) of production, distribution and consumption games pop up in areas far from their intended market (Swalwell, 2007). Indeed, when they permeate geographical and political boundaries they have the capacity to transform traditional ways of consuming media and even the way individuals interact within society (Svelch, 2018). In doing so, they alter contemporary notions of how these societies are viewed. As Marshall McLuhan wrote, as societies change, so do games. By exploring the transnational histories of games, this conference series seeks to provide a forum for presentation and discussion of how transnational games transform across local, regional, national, international and global spaces and times and how they challenge and rework or hold and replicate, the status quo of those societies (Debus and Hammeleff Jorgensen, 2017). Given the expansive, transnational, transformative and transdisciplinary reach and constitution of games histories, the conference welcomes original submissions from researchers and scholars working across the spectrum of academic disciplines, including, but not limited to: economic history; cultural history social history; computer science; military history; cultural history; media history; memory studies; sensory history; the history of technology; psychology of games; history of play; history of games, history of computing, art history; material histories; ethnography; historical archaeology; museology; information science; preservation; curation; education studies and heritage studies. This workshop will bring together international and Chinese academic researchers, public historians, and industry professionals who are interested in the history of computing. 2019 BSHS Ayrton Prize for digital engagement: nominations open

JS The British Society for the History of Science’s Outreach and Engagement Committee <https://www.bshs.org.uk/category/outreach-and-education> is delighted to invite nominations to the *BSHS Ayrton Prize 2019.* This prize is awarded once every two years to recognise outstanding digital engagement in the history of science, technology and medicine (HSTM). We interpret the term “digital engagement” broadly to include: •publicly accessible websites, or clearly defined contributions to existing web-based projects •podcasts and audio or video projects created for online delivery •online forums for public dialogue and discussion •social media initiatives (the nomination should be for a well-defined and publicly identifiable campaign or series of activities, rather than a general engagement presence) •smartphone apps •citizen science-style public engagement projects delivered online •virtual/augmented reality environments •simulations and models based on historical sources or data •projects using digital methods to make source materials more accessible to a wider audience (for example, 3D imaging of historical objects) •research projects which apply digital humanities approaches to HSTM sources or metadata, provided they have a public engagement element •digital tools and utilities to aid the work of public engagement professionals. If you are interested in nominating a project which seems to fall outside these categories, please contact the organisers for clarification. Flatirons Lectures

In 2019, I organized a distinguished lecture series on the history of computers, information, and society at the University of Colorado Boulder with help from the College of Media, Communication, and Information. Most of the lecturers revised their papers, and these papers appear in a just-published edited volume in the Springer History of Computing series under the title Historical Studies in Computing, Information, and Society: Insights from the Flatirons Lectures. The Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science holds its annual meeting from May 30th-June 1st, 2020 at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario as part of a larger event the Congress of the Humanities and Social Science. Dear Friends, These are exciting times at the Charles Babbage Institute (CBI), and we would like to share with you a few highlights from 2019: - The completion of multi-institutional project—a documentary on the history of computing in Minnesota. http://click.ecommunications2.umn.edu/?qs=6a3081b0585aabc36245e2644759533a7… Watch Solid State documentary . - CBI and the University Libraries launched the annual Samek Lecture in Information Science and Culture, with an inaugural lecture by leading IT scholar Bill Aspray. - The addition of Colorado’s Bill Aspray, and MIT’s Jennifer Light, as CBI Senior Research Fellows, as well as HSTM’s hiring of Assistant Professor Honghong Tinn, who also serves as an affiliated historian at CBI. - Archivist Amanda Wick and I co-led a highly successful Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group (SIG) Heritage/History Workshop, educating computer scientists from around the world interested in archiving and oral history. We expect that 2020 will be another exceptional year. Dear colleagues, Apologies that ACM Books messed up with initial pricing for the recently published Computing and the National Science Foundation, 1950-2016 by Peter Freeman, Rick Adrion, and Bill Aspray. ACM Books promised me to price its history titles at $40 softcover / $60 hardback — roughly in line with market rates. This correction now made on Amazon.
