REGISTER HERE <https://www.tickettailor.com/events/romchipajournalofgamehistories/1144389> *About the Book* *The Privilege of Play* contends that in order to understand geek identity’s exclusionary tendencies, we need to know the history of the overwhelmingly white communities of tabletop gaming hobbyists that preceded it. It begins by looking at how the privileged networks of model railroad hobbyists in the early twentieth century laid a cultural foundation for the scenes that would grow up around war games, role-playing games, and board games in the decades ahead. These early networks of hobbyists were able to thrive because of how their leisure interests and professional ambitions overlapped. Yet despite the personal and professional strides made by individuals in these networks, the networks themselves remained cloistered and homogeneous—the secret playgrounds of white men. *About the Author*Aaron Trammell is Assistant Professor of Informatics and Core Faculty in Visual Studies at University of California, Irvine and author of *Repairing Play: A Black Phenomenology*. Call for Papers for participation at ICHST 2025 in New Zealand HAPOC Symposium “The Computer in Motion” The DHST Commission for the History and Philosophy of Computing (HAPOC) is inviting proposals for participation in the HAPOC symposium to be held as part of ICHST 2025 conference (https://www.ichst2025.org/) We invite scholars to present their research on subjects that explore computers and computing from historical perspectives within the framework of the congress theme “Peoples, Places, Exchanges, and Circulation”. Computers have always been on the move between disciplines, nations, communities, cultures, and social spheres. With each move they adapt to the milieu, and the milieu adapts to them. The symposium focuses on all forms of computers in motion, from the most abstract to the most material, from global to locally situated. Contributions could address, but are not limited to the following topics: - Metadisciplinary ambitions of computerisation; roots and models of digital humanities; the computational turn in natural sciences and humanities. - Epistemics, history, and politics of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and language models. - Materiality of data exchange, data sharing and data access, as well as standards and protocols. - Collaboration and/or its failure between computer experts, international circulation of ideas and appropriation of concepts and practices between disciplines; politics of computing as well as regimes of secrecy, censorship, spying, and proprietary ownership that prevent circulation. - Local, national, and international computer networks; global communication infrastructures. - Visioners, founding figures, and hidden figures of computing; hackers, crackers, gamers, and game-changing technologies. Dear Colleagues, I hope you’ll consider submitting a paper for the Histories of Computing in Asia workshop, which will be held in Phuket, Thailand, in September 2024. We welcome historical accounts, first-hand narratives, historiographies, pedagogical papers, and papers about relevant museum or archival holdings. More information is available in our full CFP: https://ifipwg97.org/workshops/hca2024/ As can be seen from our full CFP, IFIP Working Group 9.7 is interested in broadening the history of computing with an understanding of international cooperation and developments in Asian countries. Asia offers many exemplary stories about the importance of international connectedness in computing. Many computing professionals hail from this region, to be sure, but also some early developments like Korea’s Cyworld presaged international phenomena. As always, adapting technology to local conditions results in innovation and local histories provide important caveats to universal histories. Some of this information has been published in languages other than English, so our workshop will also help to build a bridge between the English-speaking community with research in other languages. Our typical practice is to publish post-workshop proceedings. We will review conference papers (2,500 to 5,000 words) until 1 April 2024. Acceptances along with reviewer comments will be announced on 1 May 2024. We will circulate draft papers in advance of the workshop with the aim of fostering a lively discussion at the workshop, which will be held at Dusit Thani Laguna in Phuket. Authors can then revise their papers based on comments at the workshop for consideration in the proceedings volume, which will be published by Springer. Working Group 9.7 has organized more than a dozen workshops that highlight the international nature of the history of computing, particularly with our Springer volumes on Nordic countries, Soviet and Russian computing, and eastern Europe. Even though the workshop language is English, most of our participants do not speak English as a first language; we are committed to international exchange, so we encourage all researchers to participate. Report: 'Collecting, Curating, Preserving and Researching Media Arts'

Dear SIGCIS, I wanted to share a publication from late last year, from the team I lead that may be of interest to some of you. While the case studies are media artworks, we wrote it with the hope it might be useful to those thinking about born digital content needing emulation, more generally. The Archiving Australian Media Arts (AAMA) project have published 'Collecting, Curating, Preserving and Researching Media Arts: A good practice report'. In this report, we detail what we did to address the challenges posed by preserving and providing access to born-digital cultural artefacts, how we went about the work of locating media artworks from the 1990s, recovering content from obsolete media carriers, and testing Emulation-as-a-Service (EaaS). We consider the potential of emulation for curation, exhibition, and research with examples from case studies. The result of research funded by the Australian Research Council and undertaken in partnership with AARNet, Swinburne University, RMIT University, ACMI, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Griffith University Art Museum, State Library of South Australia, ANAT and Experimenta, this 'good practice report' offers insights for academics, practitioners and industry leaders, whist also foreshadowing the benefits of the shared digital infrastructure we are currently building across Australia that will ensure sustainable access to cultural collections. Historicizing State Quantification in Disciplinary and Control Societies (P341) Convenors: Luke Stark (Western University), Melissa Adler (Western University), David Nemer (University of Virginia) Numerical techniques and technologies used to inscribe and circulate differences—racial, gendered, class, caste-based, and others—are everywhere in disciplinary and control societies. This panel interrogates the history of these quantitative mechanisms of power, and the ways they have been resisted. To propose a paper, go to https://nomadit.co.uk/conference/easst-4s2024/p/14425 Numerous thinkers (including Fanon, Foucault, Deleuze, Crenshaw, Hartman, Freire, and others) have theorized the ways in which the political arithmetic of the capitalist state and its agents has prompted the development of numerical techniques and technologies to inscribe and circulate differences—racial, gendered, class, caste-based, and others—about populations intended for exploitation and dispossession. In this panel, we aim to further interrogate the history of these quantitative, statistical, and inferential mechanisms of power. From the Enlightenment calculation of early American enslavers to the contemporary deep learning transformations of artificial intelligence (AI) practitioners, and even the human infrastructures that transmit disinformation through messaging apps, numbers have never been neutral nor free from narrative. This panel will focus on the continuities in thinking and practice around the use of numbers as a tool of oppression across both space and time, and the often-nuanced strategies of resistance and cooption that progressive social movements have deployed in response. Some of the questions we hope to see addressed by the panel include the following: • How have historical discourses and ideologies of inequality, oppression, and supremacy prompted, shaped, and refined quantitative or technical metrics and mechanisms of scientific or social differentiation? • How have the developers of these metrics and techniques drawn on transnational or global circuits of oppression? • What are examples of such technical metrics and mechanisms being developed in an overtly oppressive context and then laundered more general scientific practice? How have professional fields such as medicine, statistics, and psychology grappled with or ignored these historical genealogies? • How have people and communities targeted by such numerical mechanisms resisted, responded, refused, and coopted these technologies? What have been the results of such encounters, and what lessons can contemporary groups dedicated to opposing unfreedom take from these historical examples?
