Hi: English Heritage is a charity that manages over 400 historic monuments, buildings and places. These include prehistoric sites, medieval castles, Roman forts and country houses. London’s blue plaques scheme, run by English Heritage, celebrates the links between notable figures of the past and the buildings in which they lived and worked. Founded in 1866, it has inspired many similar schemes in the UK and around the world. CfA Spend a Research Sabbatical at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS)

You want more freedom to pursue your project and are interested in interdisciplinary exchange? A fellowship at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) releases you from your regular work obligations and opens up new perspectives. As a fellow, you can spend either six or three months in Bochum, Germany. During this period, we will finance your sabbatical leave from work through compensation (e.g. for a substitute). Alternatively, we will pay grants of up to 2.000 € per month. You can invite guests for collaboration and will receive financial support for research expenses. It did not call him the "inventor," thank goodness, as there has been some discussion among us of who may have invented it. I won't go there. CAL Timesharing System (1968-1971)

The Computer History Museum recently acquired a set of original records (memos, manuals, source code, etc., with a full digital copy) for the CAL Timesharing System: Records of the CAL Timesharing System, Acquisition 2022.0154, Computer History Museum. https://CalTSS.computerhistory.org CAL TSS was developed by a half-dozen programmers over about three years. It was operated for about two years on one system, serving a user community in the dozens. Funding ran out just as full functionality was achieved. The archives at the Computer History Museum as well as fairly extensive administrative records from the Office of the Chancellor at UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library make the project a possible topic for future studies in timesharing system development circa 1970. It ran on a mainframe computer, the Control Data Corporation 6400, and was one of the earliest systems to use capabilities for protection. Using our memories, archival records, and files preserved by McJones that are part of a donation to the Computer History Museum, we discuss the origin of the project, development of the software, and the brief experience using the system before it was shut down in May 1972. Hello, SIGCIS. I'm passing along a note from the Technology & Culture editorial team (below). They are soliciting new reviewers for books and manuscripts. Best, Jason --------- As the editorial team of Technology and Culture, it is our ambition to use the book review section to provide a comprehensive overview of new books relevant to historians of technology, defining history of technology quite broadly, and including books in other languages than English. As a result, at the moment we publish on average 40 reviews per issue. Given the relatively small size of our team, we are always on the lookout for people willing to review books (or manuscripts) for us. For book reviews, our general guidelines ask for a 700- word review. Our standard deadline is two months from the arrival of the book, but we are willing to work with your schedule. If you are interested in reviewing, and have the time and capacity to do so, please send a message to the assistant review editor Henk-Jan Dekker (assistant(a)techculture.org) and book review assistant Leon Vauterin (bookreviewassistant(a)techculture.org) In your email, please attach a short CV, specify what your expertise and current interests are, and the subjects of books you would like to review. Projects may include (but are not limited to) historical research and documentation projects resulting in publications, exhibitions, educational initiatives, documentary films, or other multimedia products. Topics: The Lemelson Center invites all applications covering the broad spectrum of research topics in the history of technology, invention, and innovation. However, the Center especially encourages proposals that align with one (or more) of its strategic research and programmatic areas, including 1) projects that illuminate inventors from diverse backgrounds or any inventions and technologies associated with under-represented groups, such as women, minorities, LGBTQ, and the disabled; (2) projects exploring innovation in sports and sports technology; or (3) projects that explore the broader ecosystem of individuals and institutions that support inventors, including inventors' professional organizations; angel investors, venture capitalists, and financiers; incubators and entrepreneurial coaches; patent agents and IP attorneys; product designers, manufacturers, and marketers; and bankruptcy-liquidation specialists. The Arthur Molella Distinguished Fellowship supports the work of an experienced author or senior scholar (associate/full/emeritus professor level or equivalent) from the history of technology, science and technology studies, business history, museum studies, STEAM education, or an allied field. The specific arrangement is flexible: the Molella Fellow may use the funds as a sabbatical supplement; for several short-duration visits; for a virtual appointment focused on research and writing; or for a series of lectures leading to a major publication. The stipend is $35,000. Funds may be used flexibly to support teaching buyouts, travel for several short-term visits, living expenses for longer residences up to six months, and related research expenses.
