Spend a Research Sabbatical at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS)

Are you researching the social, political, media-related or cultural effects of digitalization? Do you want more freedom for your project and are interested in interdisciplinary exchange? A fellowship at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) releases you from your regular work obligations and opens up new perspectives. As a fellow, you can spend either six or three months in Bochum, Germany. During this period, we will finance your sabbatical leave from work through compensation (e.g. for a substitute). Alternatively, we will pay grants of up to 2.000 € per month. You can invite guests for collaboration and will receive financial support for research expenses. Individual offices and meeting rooms with modern facilities offer optimal working conditions. In addition, we will provide comfortable apartments free of charge. Become a member of the vibrant interdisciplinary research community at CAIS. Apply until 31 October 2022 for fellowships starting from October 2023. The funding program is open to excellent scholars and practitioners, to all career stages, disciplines and areas of investigation, as well as to pure research and to projects that are more applied in orientation. ACM History Committee to Host "Capturing Hidden ACM History Preservation Seminar

The History Committee of the Association for Computing Machinery will be holding an online seminar Sept. 30 - Oct. 1 on preserving computing history with a focus on the ACM's work and heritage. The seminar is designed for individuals who are planning or are actively involved in projects related to ACM history, including the history of Special Interest Groups (SIGs), past or present. The seminar will explore concepts and methods for heritage preservation, including professional archiving practices. Peter Landin archive now available

Dear all, I’m very excited to share with you the news that the Peter Landin material held by the Bodleian Library, in Oxford, is now catalogued and available for research! Peter Landin (1930–2009) was a computer science researcher in the 1960s and lecturer from the 70s on, when he largely retired from research. Landin’s influence on CS remains heavily felt in the semantics and functional programming communities. He also became a significant campaigner for various social rights, particularly gay rights—he was himself gay—but also anti-war and environmental concerns. SIGCIS Book Auction - call for donations

Dear SIGCIS, We’re excited to convene in person again in New Orleans, for the SHOT Annual Meeting (Nov 10-13) and SIGCIS Conference (Sunday, November 13). One tradition we’re reviving is the SIGCIS Book Auction, which is an important way for us to raise funds to support travel for graduate students to attend SHOT and SIGCIS. The SIGCIS Book Auction will take place on Friday, November 11, at the SIGCIS lunch. (You can register for the lunch when you complete your SHOT registration.) The most important element in the SIGCIS Book Auction is… books! This is where we depend on your kind donations. If you have new (or ‘classic’) books that you think would be compelling for SIGCIS members, you can donate them to the auction in 2 different ways: 1. Come to New Orleans, and bring your books! 2. Can’t make the trip? Mail the book to me (or someone else in the SIGCIS orbit), and we’ll bring it to the Auction. In either case, if you’d like to donate a book, please respond to me with the title of the book(s) you plan to donate—this will help me keep track of things, avoid duplicate/triplicates, etc. We’d appreciate it if you can respond no later than October 15, 2022.
