Alt text: A cartoon dog in a small hat sits calmly in a wooden chair at a dining table while flames and smoke consume the room. *As the World Burns: On Media and Climate* Guest Editors: Corinna Kirsch, PhD (Pratt Institute) and Rebecca Uliasz (Duke University) *Deadline for abstracts: Monday, July 31, 2023* For this special issue of *Media-N* <https://iopn.library.illinois.edu/journals/median/information/authors>, the editors invite abstracts on topics related to the history, theory, and aesthetics of digital media and climate. We hope to shed light on the long history of digital art and media’s participation in planetary processes connected to climate change, including the challenges posed by new media art’s ongoing culpability and participation in its advancement, and the overarching effects of these actions on social, perceptual, and cognitive registers, both globally and individually. Through this form of eco-criticism, we approach two acute developments faced today, each bearing enormous and unevenly distributed threats to a globalized world: climate change and the proliferation of data-driven technology across nearly every social sphere. We also seek alternatives to climate discourse’s hyper-focus on present-day structures by appealing to deep histories and non-western approaches to the ambiguous interconnection of media and “nature.” In so doing, we see that the relationship between media and climate is not a new situation by any means, nor is it a universal one: the Anthropocene began prior to this century, with geological shifts recorded at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and, even further back, to the European colonization of the Americas. As Andreas Malm has put it, “We can never be in the heat of the moment, only in the heat of this ongoing past.” Questions informing the special issue include: In what ways are new media scholars, activists, and artists engaging with the Earth-altering processes of technology? How have practitioners, scholars, and activists working with digital media illuminated the way agency, subjectivity, and environment is defined and operationalized in diverse geo- and socio-political contexts? What alternatives might be sought through appealing to indigenous and other forms of climate knowledge, cultivated by communities that have long found themselves subjected to colonially-induced climate change? As a method of promoting cross-disciplinary conversation among the new media community, we are seeking project reports, exhibition and event reviews, interviews, and manifestos in addition to formal research papers. Please disseminate this call to potentially interested parties. * *16th CIFAS Field School in Ethnographic Research Methods in New York City* July 24 to August 4, 2023 – 9 AM to 12 PM EDT The Comitas Institute for Anthropological Study (CIFAS) is pleased to announce the 16th CIFAS Field School in Ethnographic Research Methods. The Field School aims to offer training in the foundations and practice of ethnographic methods. The faculty works closely with participants to identify the required field methods to address their academic or professional needs. The Field School is suitable for graduate and undergraduate students in social sciences and other fields of study that use qualitative approaches (such as education, communication, cultural studies, health, social work, human ecology, development studies, and consumer behavior, among others), applied social scientists, professionals, and researchers who have an interest in learning more about ethnographic methods and their applications. *Program:* - - Foundations of ethnographic research - Theory and practice: social theories in the field - Ethics - Decolonial approaches - Research design - Data generation techniques - Planning the logistics of field research - Digital ethnography - Ethnography in interface with Social Network Analysis and other trends in the field of the digital humanities - Ethnography in specific fields of activity (applied social sciences, health, social service, environmental studies, public policy design, business, and others) - Principles of organization and indexation of field data - Analyzing field data; qualitative analysis software packages: basic principles The total workload of the course is 30 hours. Historians of technology - seeking your thoughts on US AI policy

Dear colleagues, The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) request for input to develop a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy <https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/05/26/2023-11346/request-for…> offers historians of technology an opportunity to offer historically grounded suggestions for contemporary government policy. With a submission deadline of July 7, we need to move quickly. What follows is an experiment, not a set blueprint. Please freely comment about procedure as well as content. I propose two lines of action: people responding individually and working together to submit responses. My focus is the latter. The request has 29 questions, divided into five areas: Protecting rights, safety, and national security Advancing equity and strengthening civil rights Bolstering democracy and civic participation Promoting economic growth and good jobs Innovating in public services OSTP is limiting a response to ten pages (excluding references), thus encouraging respondents to establish their priorities using their expertise and assessment of the questions’ importance. The questions ask whether the diffusion of AI can help or hurt the United States in those areas both in general and for specific subsectors. Historical experience -- such as the (uneven) diffusion of the Internet, of electrification, of transportation technologies; redlining; and access to financing – can shape our responses. I suggest organizing to - discuss what questions are the highest priorities - form subgroups to focus on those questions - critique and edit suggestions - submit responses by July 7 If you are interested, please respond to this email or contribute to a Google Docs <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1P0G-uKP2cG5LpxO9GUixPqVfJY5fyAQBeor7h0o…>. All responses to the OSTP request will be publicly available (which creates an opportunity for more research – see below). We can use Google Docs and zoom to communicate and coordinate. Future research: After July 7, all the submitted responses will be publicly available. That will be an opportunity to analyze the perceptions of the respondents about AI. Dear SIGCIS, I'm pleased to let you know that my latest book, The Early Development of Project Gutenberg, c.1970-2000, has been published as part of the Cambridge Elements in Publishing and Book Culture series: https://www.cambridge.org/core/elements/early-development-of-project-gutenb… Cambridge University Press will provide free access to the Element through that link until June 29th. In the book I re-examine the established narrative of Project Gutenberg's development beyond the often-hagiographic focus on Michael Hart's role as the founder, instead focusing on how the Project was a team effort that required legal and technical expertise to grow. While I mainly focus on the history of digital publishing and digitization, I tie this together with research from the history of computing and the emergence of the Internet which should be of interest to SIGCIS members. The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in a related field and have research and teaching interests in science, technology, and society; information technology and society; and history. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses such as IT and Society; History of Technology; and American History. The teaching load is three four-credit courses per semester.
