No? Maybe? They were all videogames created for the Intellivision videogame system, sold by Mattel Electronics between 1979 and 1984. This system was Atari's main rival during a key period when videogames were moving from the arcades into the home. In *Intellivision*, Tom Boellstorff and Braxton Soderman tell the fascinating inside story of this overlooked gaming system. Along the way, they also analyze Intellivision's chips and code, games, marketing and business strategies, organizational and social history, and the cultural and economic context of the early US games industry from the mid-1970s to the great videogame industry crash of 1983. While many remember Atari, Intellivision has largely been forgotten. As such, *Intellivision* fills a crucial gap in videogame scholarship, telling the story of a console that sold millions and competed aggressively against Atari. Epstein will explore a little-known but important chapter in the history of analog computing, and its surprising connections with today’s world of digital devices and great-power competition.* *In the decade before World War I, two British civilians named Arthur Pollen and Harold Isherwood invented an artificially intelligent analog computer for aiming the big guns of battleships. Rather than pay for their invention, however, first the British navy and then the US navy pirated it. When the inventors sued for patent infringement, both governments invoked legal privileges to withhold evidence on the grounds of national-security secrecy. The US lawsuits became entangled with high-level Anglo-American diplomacy during World War II and with the Manhattan Project. My new book, Mediating Plureality, comes out on February 15, and though it is mostly about media and technology in society, there's actually also a chapter in it that you might find interesting. The chapter discusses the materiality of computing with a grounding in its history. I make a Kittler-esque argument that for ethical reasons, we should begin understanding computing more as the result of physical processes than symbolic, harking back to the 1937-38 period and Stibitz, Atanasoff, and Zuse experimenting with relays. Morten ABOUT THE BOOK Mediating Plureality: Technology, Perception and Ethics in a Divided Democracy is one of the first books of the second Trump administration to deal with affective polarization and truth. Author Morten Bay asks what role media and tech have played in the current democratic decline and finds provocative answers. In the book, he claims that: * Contrary to popular belief, social media content is not to blame. * The problem began with the shift to a high-choice media environment in the early 1990s, including talk radio and the early Web. * Around this time, to stave off online competition, news media began insisting that they owned The Truth. * Simultaneously, the tech industry's faith in data and prediction fostered a new epistemic overconfidence. * This led to widespread epistemic arrogance becoming morally acceptable. * Which, in turn, led to increased self-sorting and the rise of affective polarization. * Even scholars began ignoring centuries of basic epistemology despite of new, neuroscientific advances supporting a constructivist approach to reality perception. Drawing on political theorists who argue that these are perfect conditions for authoritarianism, Bay contends that democratic decline from epistemic arrogance must be met with epistemic humility. He calls for a cultural shift toward greater acceptance of other people’s reality perceptions and proposes an ethics of pluralist realities – a plureality. (This was in order to give his “Artificial Intelligence: The Brand that Wouldn’t Die” lecture, but it also gave me an opportunity to debate further with Tom his attempted re-definition of the concept of programmability! 😊) Tom had a sizeable, and very appreciative, audience at Newcastle for his talk - I can warmly recommend others elsewhere in the UK to take up his offer to repeat this talk when he returns to the Newton Institute in March/April - and to read the excellent recent CACM series on which the talk is based. Other than more detail, context, and human background a main difference is that each short chapter in the book features a relatively detailed case study of a classic AI-branded system. This is a short history of AI in all senses, focusing on the brand itself and the relationship of AI to the development of computer science as a discipline. Given the huge industry focused on writing about modern AI the focus is almost exclusively on AI prior to the recent boom, with a brief discussion of contemporary approaches there primarily as a contrast. In all formats, I've been making an effort to showcase a variety of interesting work that's been appearing on the topic from younger scholars over the last few years. In November I was at the IWM in Vienna as the Senior Digital Humanism fellow. While in town I also agreed to teach a compressed graduate course for the compute science students at the technical university, using a draft of the book as the core text. It was also, from 1985 to 1993, the platform for which most video games were made. But although it sold at least twice as many units as other home computers of its time, such as the Apple II, ZX Spectrum, or Commodore Amiga, it is strangely forgotten in many computer histories. In *Too Much Fun*, Jesper Juul argues that the C64 was so popular because it was so versatile, a machine developers and users would reinvent again and again over the course of 40 years. First it was a serious computer, next a game computer, then a computer for showcasing technical brilliance (graphical *demos* using the machine in seemingly impossible ways), then a struggling competitor, and finally a retro device whose limitations are now charming. The C64, Juul shows, has been ignored by history because it was too much fun. Richly illustrated in full color, this book is the first in-depth examination of the C64's design and history, and the first to integrate US and European histories. Public health experts have long warned against these beverages’ negative health effects, but these drinks can also teach us a great deal about consumption – not just of gaming *content* but also how media stamina and endurance intersect with bathroom breaks, nourishment, tiredness, and attention. Taking an historical approach to energy drinks and the gaming culture that surrounds them, Plotnick's talk considers how long-held ideas about caffeination, hydration, sport, and fatigue – from studies of pilots to athletes drinking Gatorade – inform the present moment. As energy drinks offer a solution to burning out or tuning out, they medicalize media use to produce the ideal gamer and the never-ending game. *About the Speaker*Rachel Plotnick is an associate professor of cinema and media studies in The Media School at Indiana University Bloomington.
