Dear SIGCIS members, After all the great discussions I've been following here, I'd like to share something for the first time. My name is Magnus Rust and I am currently an assistant/PhD candidate at the University of Basel, where I am doing historical research on the life and work of computer science pioneer and technology skeptic Joe Weizenbaum (1923-2008), whose biography has not yet been researched (as far as I know). Dear list members I am very happy to announce that, together with Julia Gül Erdogan, Michael Homberg and Stefan Müller, I'm co-organising next year's edition of the International Conference of Labour and Social History (ITH) under the topic of "Worlds of Digital Labour". We would like to bring together computer and labour historians, and welcome papers that deal with the history of work conditions, labour relations and labour struggles in the computer and IT industries. WDPD: Software Preservation and Emulation in Australia

Please find the link below to the World Digital Preservation Day event run by the AusEaaSI network: Software Preservation and Emulation in Australia: A #WDPD2023 Event. The Australian Emulation Network (AusEaaSI for short) is a consortium of university researchers, GLAM organisations, and technology providers that received Australian Research Council Linkage Infrastructure funding to roll out shared emulation infrastructure in the form of an EaaSI (Emulation as a Service infrastructure) network and set up a Community of Practice in software preservation. There are opportunities to join the network as it expands. If you're interested in learning more about the network and the project, we invite you to join us for a one hour session, which will feature researchers and GLAM professionals showing some of their emulation successes. This will be followed by a Question & Answer session. The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington is hiring for an Assistant Professor position with a focus on equity&engineering to provide excellence in teaching and research programs in our dynamic, interdisciplinary intellectual community in Autumn 2024. https://apply.interfolio.com/132363 HCDE is a vibrant, welcoming, and engaged interdisciplinary community that incorporates a range of intellectual traditions. Successful candidates will join a dynamic faculty conducting research in the design and engineering of sociotechnical systems broadly defined. We offer BS, MS, and PhD degrees and serve as a founding contributor to three interdisciplinary graduate degrees. Candidates will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and will supervise doctoral students. The yearly teaching load is three courses (one per quarter) plus supervision of for-credit directed research groups. Teaching opportunities will be based on our current course offerings and the individual’s areas of scholarly expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to expand on an emerging area within the department: Equity and Engineering. We are particularly interested in scholars whose work lies at the intersection of agendas oriented toward addressing societal inequities and work in human centered design and engineering, but all qualified candidates are welcome to apply. We especially encourage candidates whose research engages Black Studies, Indigenous Studies, and related strands of decolonial thought and/or centers the intellectual genealogies of Black and Indigenous groups. Successful candidates will be expected to address the societal implications of technology. Successful candidates are expected to develop substantial programs of research including peer-reviewed publications and external funding. All UW faculty engage in teaching, research and service. 50 years of ACM and IEEE Technical Journals

Folks: I have over 50 years of ACM and IEEE Computer Society Technical Journals relative to Computing and IT. I have run out of space for storing them and would like to donate them to a university or college that might be interested in having these collections. All are in very good to excellent condition except for a few that were slightly damaged in transit by our beloved Postal Service. Some of the collections terminate when the respective organizations transitioned to electronic publication only. As you know, ACM has announced they will not publish in hard copy after December 31, so if some insititution is missing issues, they might be able to find them in this set of journals. If some institution wants this donation, they should contact me. The journals reside at my home in Laurel, MD, so they will need to come and collect them. I hesitate to recycle them, but I will be forced to do this beginning in the new year. Steve Kaisler, D.Sc.
