The successful applicant will join a research team of the project Media platforms and social accountability: Dynamics, practices and discourses funded by the Academy of Finland. Media platforms and social accountability: Dynamics, practices and discourses studies digital media platforms as crucial sites for social accountability processes and debates across global contexts. The project uses digital methods combined with qualitative approaches to examine the changing dynamics, practices and discourses of social accountability. The project produces new knowledge of the ways in which social media platforms intervene and influence accountability processes, both facilitating and threatening democratic participation. Further, it investigates how the accountability of platform companies is globally demanded and contested by governments and civil society actors, and how the platforms act to reclaim their legitimacy in response. QUALIFICATIONS An appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree within media and communication studies or an adjacent field in the humanities, social sciences or data sciences. The default assumption is that the appointee will hold a doctoral degree before commencing work, and have the ability to conduct independent scientific work. The candidate is furthermore expected to demonstrate a background in one or more of the following fields: digital media studies, media policy research, media industry studies, global media studies, internet research. Previous experience in the collection and analysis of digital media data and digital methods is an asset. The successful applicant should also possess appropriate teaching skills in higher education. The duties of the postdoctoral researcher include teaching for the Faculty of Social Sciences (5% of the annual workload). The chosen applicant is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki, and to participate actively in the intellectual life of the discipline of Media and Communication Studies and the wider scientific community across and beyond the Faculty of Social Sciences and the University of Helsinki. The Faculty of Social Sciences provides assistance in relocation. The working language will be English. New CBI Website/Pandemic times research w/ CBI materials (born digital/digitized collections online, oral histories, scanning services...)

Dear Colleagues, Wanted to share that we at the Charles Babbage Institute for Computing, Information & Culture (CBI) did a complete redesign of the CBI Website (a major half year undertaking as we had 8,800 web pages!). CBI Archivist/Curator Amanda Wick and I helped, but the lion's share was done by CBI Admin. Melissa Dargay, who did a tremendous job! CBI's new website <https://cse.umn.edu/cbi> (Note the old URL has redirects to this, as do core areas such as *Interfaces*, collections, oral histories, etc). *In these pandemic times, I wanted to highlight that CBI has considerable material for primary research online. I was recently asked by a UMN HSTM faculty colleague to teach a graduate seminar session on CBI oral history methods/resources and other history of tech and science digital primary resources at CBI (and beyond). So thought I'd share a few things on our materials available remotely in case it might be helpful to you or your students.* - Before jumping to the digital resources, I will start with the readily digitizable/scannable. We have over 320 collections of print/manuscript materials--7,000 plus feet. Given detailed CBI Finding Aids, and the nature of particular collections, some are especially conducive to ascertaining smaller discrete portions where modest sized scanning orders can be placed (scanning is done at relatively low rates, basically at cost, by Univ. Libraries, we are a partnership of HSTM/CSE and UL). Plan well in advance as scanning orders done by limited staff in the library building to maintain safety, please check with Amanda. A few examples of such materials.... the wide ranging gray literature of the National Bureau of Standards Computer Lit. Collection (NBS collected all reports it could on computing from gov., industry, white papers, etc. for 30 years and NBS/NIST gave them to us) consists of 10,000s of reports on virtually all areas of computing from the 1950 to 1970s, every title is in the FA. Another example is the Social Issues in Computing Collection of ephemera, pamphlets, booklets, books, and manuscripts on computing and race, gender, labor, GBLTQIA... materials highly conducive to research in the social history and sociology of computing. - CBI has some exciting born-digital collections on such topics as Internet history and standards, Seymour Cray/Cray Research, graphics, etc. - About 500 oral histories available in full text online, most done by CBI historians on NSF, NEH, DARPA, and Sloan sponsored projects--we have special concentrations of oral histories in some of the core following areas, and are continually adding to our collection (I am currently doing two oral history projects, including one for ACM on HCI): - gender/women''s history of computing/software - computer security; computer networking - AI, ML - HCI - Graphics - Time-Sharing - CDC, IBM, IT industries - scientific computing, etc. - We have more than 275 shorter interviews with different categories of users of NSF's cyberinfrastructure FastLane (faculty, staff, program officers, developers designers, NSF top managers), all done by Tom Misa and me. Interviews rich for rhetorical analysis on IT and the history of science or other topics and framings wholly different from what Tom and I used them for in our *FastLane: Managing Science in the Internet World* book. - Of CBI's 150,000 plus photographs many thousands of selected photographs have been scanned, especially in Burroughs and Control Data Collections but other people, firms, tech, settings, as well. The position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, home based in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, and will begin in the fall semester of 2021. Strong candidates will have a firm grounding in humanities-based media studies with expertise in two key areas: 1) research relating to media and Chinese identity (as experienced in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and in Chinese communities around the globe), with a desired emphasis on digital communications media (e.g. social media platforms) or film; and 2) digital humanities or cultural analytics approaches that dramatically enhance research horizons related to cultural identity and diversity through sophisticated data analysis and visualization, multimodal scholarly projects, or related practices. The successful candidate will possess the interdisciplinary expertise needed to provide training in Chinese-language media cultures and systems, information literacy, and the global history, theory, and/or production of digital media. Potential areas of emphasis include, for instance, civic media and communication, activist media, and authoritarian media policy. A Ph.D. in the field of East Asian studies and/or film and media studies, or a closely related field, is required at the time of appointment. For full consideration, candidates must have the preparation to teach introductory or survey courses on the history, theory, and analysis of digital media, and/or digital media production/analytics. The candidate should have native or near native fluency in both Chinese and English and research-appropriate abilities in Chinese language. Duties will include teaching assigned courses at the graduate and undergraduate level, normally two per semester. Of the four courses to be offered during the academic year, one will be assigned by the Program in Film and Media Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research and publishing program. Duties will further include student advising and appropriate departmental and university service activities. Useful video clips of Turing Award winners

Hello SIGCIS, For some years I've had a little side job for the ACM as editor of the Turing Award website: https://amturing.acm.org/. This centers on short biographical profiles of the awardees. https://amturing.acm.org/alphabetical.cfm Most of the heavy lifting to get those written, edited, and posted was carried out by the founding editor, Mike Williams. ACM has been running a major initiative to get video history interviews performed with as many of the living Turing awardees as possible. In some cases they have borrowed existing interviews performed by other organizations, but most of the featured interviews are newly conducted and range from one to four hours. The majority are conducted by fellow computer scientists or journalists with only a handful by historians, so there's considerable variation in tone, interview strategy and topics covered from one interview to another. We have attached the full video interviews to the profiles, via "Video Interview' icon near the top of the profile. All together, there are currently 35 video interviews, all available on YouTube: https://www.acm.org/turing-award-50/turing-laureate-interviews. It turned out that not many people were clicking over from the profiles to watch the videos, and that YouTube is more excited by unboxing and cat videos than long interviews with eminent computer scientists. So the ACM History Committee sponsored me to edit down short (mostly 3 to 6 minute) clips from the long interviews and embed them in the biographical profiles. These clips might also be useful for those of you teaching computer science courses or history or STS courses that touch on the contributions of the awardees. In particular, digital machines of the 20th century were inspired by the biological individual, replacing with a solipsistic mental view the cultural and social aspects attached to the image of machines in the 19th century. However, the growing cultural import of computing practices has become ever more pressing in our days in all dimensions of social life. Not only have cultural phenomena increasingly become the object of computational analysis, but computational practices have also proved inseparable from the cultural environment in which they evolve. Therefore, it is urgent to critically address the entanglement of computing practices with the main cultural challenges our epoch is facing. The global and collective nature of such problems (e.g. climate change, global pandemics, systemic inequalities, resurgence of totalitarianism, to name a few) requires a comprehensive perspective on computing, where social and cultural aspects occupy a central position. For these reasons, thinking about machines asks today for an interdisciplinary approach, where art is as necessary as engineering, anthropological insights as important as psychological models, and the critical perspectives of history and philosophy as decisive as the axioms and theorems of theoretical computer science. For more than a decade, the “History and Philosophy of Computing” Conference (HaPoC, www.hapoc.org) has contributed to building such an interdisciplinary community and environment. We aim to bring together historians, philosophers, computer scientists, social scientists, designers, manufacturers, practitioners, artists, logicians, mathematicians, each with their own experience and expertise, to take part in the collective construction of a comprehensive image of computing. *Main Topics* For HaPoC 2021, we welcome contributions from researchers from different disciplinary horizons who intend to participate in the debate on the impact of computers on culture, science, and society from the perspective of their area of expertise, and who are open to engage in interdisciplinary discussions across multiple fields. The history of cybernetics has often displaced non-White actors and women from its accounts. Recentering them generates new understandings of the entanglements between computing, electronics, and racial formations. In paying attention to the racialized and gendered labor of these actors, this talk analyzes networked asymmetries, or the uneven associations and differential arrangements through which actors are enrolled in the making of technoscience— both as story and artifact. _____________________ Iván Chaar López is an assistant professor in Digital Studies in UT’s Department of American Studies. His research and teaching examine the politics of digital technologies.
