Hello all, I am writing a paper on the history of COMIT string processing language at MIT in the late 1950--early 60s, which involves parsing a few published programs written in the language. So far, I've made great progress using available documentation but I would also love to speak to anybody who was involved with the project (under Yngve or others at RLE or the Computing Center), and especially anybody experienced with coding in COMIT. Hey Google, What's a Moonshot: How Silicon Valley Mocks Apollo

Hello SIGCIS, This being the anniversary year for Apollo 11, I have used my latest piece in Communications of the ACM (Jan 2019) to contrast the actual scope, cost, organization and impact of the Apollo program with the smug and historically ignorant misappropriation of the "moonshot" concept by Google/Alphabet in its "moonshot factory" branding. Thanks to Paul Ceruzzi and Matthew Hersch for checking over the space history side of things for me (though as always any errors are mine). https://cacm.acm.org/magazines/2019/1/233518-hey-google-whats-a-moonshot/ful ltext In a way this is parallel to the "maintainers" critique made by Lee and Andy but approaching from the opposite direction. Even if you think that radical innovation is the most and only important thing society needs, the problem is that the federal government and tech industry are no longer willing to spend the kind of money needed to deliver it. Best regards, Andreas Fickers & Valérie Schafer Special issue of Internet Histories: Digital Technology, Culture and Society (Editors of special issue: Andreas Fickers and Valérie Schafer) The Internet and the European Market “The internet and digital technologies are transforming our world. But existing barriers online mean citizens miss out on goods and services, internet companies and start-ups have their horizons limited, and businesses and governments cannot fully benefit from digital tools. It's time to make the EU's single market fit for the digital age – tearing down regulatory walls and moving from 28 national markets to a single one”. This assessment on the European Commission website (https://ec.europa.eu/commission/priorities/digital-single-market_en <https://ec.europa.eu/commission/priorities/digital-single-market_en>) invites to analyse the relationships between the EU’s single market and the digital age from a critical perspective. This interdisciplinary special issue will examine the relationship between EU regulation, Internet and market integration from an historical perspective. We welcome articles that seek to analyse the way the development of Internet has facilitated market integration. At the same time, this development has created major regulatory challenges at the EU level — e.g. peering between ISPs, the taxation of electronic commerce, data protection issues, etc. The articles in this special issue may explore the Internet integration-regulation interactions from the perspective of a diverse range of analytical frameworks. The historical development of this interaction will be considered along with its various political, legal and economic dimensions. HCDE is a vibrant, welcoming, and engaged interdisciplinary community that incorporates a range of intellectual traditions. We offer BS, MS, and PhD degrees and serve as a founding contributor to three interdisciplinary graduate degrees. Candidates will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and will supervise doctoral students. The yearly teaching load is three courses (one per quarter) plus supervision of for-credit directed research groups. Teaching opportunities will be based on our current course offerings and the individual’s areas of scholarly expertise. Successful candidates will join a dynamic faculty conducting interdisciplinary research in the design and engineering of sociotechnical systems broadly defined.
