Call for Authors: Routledge Companion to the History of Computing

We are seeking authors for a proposed Routledge Companion to the History of Computing. We are looking for 4000-5000 word essays that survey a topic in the history of computing and critically discuss the existing scholarship (including your own, if applicable) and emerging trends in this area. Initially we are gathering names of interested authors and the topic(s) they would like to write on, for inclusion in the proposal. See attached CFP for more details. Reminder: SIGCIS Community Values and Acceptable Use Policy

Dear listserv members, When we re-opened the SIGCIS listserv in September of 2017 after a three-month hiatus, we indicated that we would send out the Acceptable Use Policy and the Statement of Community Values on an occasional basis as reminders of our commitments. Now that the annual convening is over, it seems appropriate to do that again; SIGCIS officers put considerable time and substantial thought into these documents. The Statement of Community Values is on the About page of the sigcis.org site, https://www.sigcis.org/about_values The Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is also on the sigcis.org site https://www.sigcis.org/aup; we will revisit these policies, as needed. We, the volunteer moderators, use this AUP as our guide to manage the listserv; any response to messages is post-facto. Friends - I’m writing to draw your attention to our SIGCIS Travel Award program. Mahoney Travel Award: Marc Aidinoff, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for "Jefferson's Ghost: Accessing the Internet's Haunted Memory" MIT Press Travel Award: Will Lockett, New York University, for "Archeology of the Toposcope" MIT Press Travel Award: Emma Catherine Perry, University of Georgia, for "Initial Reference, Attribution and Institutional Memory in the Age of ARPANET" Second, I am writing to thank our members who continue to support the SIGCIS Travel Awards. - We are especially grateful to Len Shustek of the Computer History Museum, who once again made a personal donation that supports the CHM Travel Award. - We also are indebted to Katie Helke and her team at MIT Press, who once again donated 10 books from their catalog that generated a sizable return for us thanks to some competitive bidding at the SIGCIS auction at our Friday lunch. - We are once again overwhelmed by the generosity of our members at the St. Louis meeting, who a) donate books, b) bid on books at the auction, c) put money into a cup at the Friday lunch, and d) put money into Laine’s hat at the start of the Sunday SIGCIS conference. 100% of these donations go directly to the travel awards that I mentioned above, and enable us to award travel funds that honor the memory of Michael S. Mahoney. Third, and finally, I imagine that many of you who did not attend SIGCIS also would be willing to donate money to support this cause. I would encourage you to do so, especially in light of the fact that next year’s meeting will be in Milan, Italy, which will elevate travel costs for a significant number of our graduate student members who live in North America. MINITEL ALL exhibition opening Nov 6 in NYC

Dear SIGCIS, We are happy to announce MINITEL ALL, an exhibition of Minitel memorabilia at the Ace Hotel in New York City. MINITEL ALL presents the material culture of the pioneering online system including collectible pins, postcards, stickers, books, and consumer electronics. MINITEL ALL will be on display in the Ace Hotel Gallery Annex from November 6 to December 16. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Please join us Tuesday, November 6 from 6-8 PM for an opening reception party. We will have working terminals on view. In addition, from December 10-14, two refurbished terminals will be installed in the hotel lobby and connected to 3615 SM, a legendary online community (or, "messagerie") from the halcyon days of Minitel. Visitors to the hotel will be invited to log on for a throwback Minitel experience, including chatting and gaming. Behind the scenes with the new History of Modern Computing

Hello SIGCIS, As some of you know, I am collaborating with Paul Ceruzzi to produce a new edition of his classic overview A History of Modern Computing. The new book will be fully updated and completely restructured and should appear with MIT Press in 2020. If want to know more about the approach we are taking, you might be interested my informal paper "Finding a Story for the History of Computing" in Siegen University's Media of Cooperation series. This can be found online at https://www001.zimt.uni-siegen.de/ojs/index.php/wps1187/article/view/20. It's like one of those "making of" featurettes that get included as bonus features on a DVD - discussing the objectives for the new edition, new structure, challenges, etc. Paul and I will both be at SHOT. If any of you have any comments or suggestions on our approach we would be happy to hear them. I'll also be looking for people to alpha test drafts of new chapters with their classes in the coming semester, as I know it is sometimes used as a textbook. Best wishes, Tom
