Ainsi voit-on proliférer des expressions à la mode (buzzword) telles que : « innovation responsable », « prospective», « société de la connaissance » « gouvernance » ainsi que des formules plus spécifiques : « human enhancement », « énergie verte », « machines moléculaires » « machines vivantes », « médecine régénérative » « missiles thérapeutiques » « theranostic », « smart technology » « empreinte carbone »…. Ce séminaire propose une analyse critique de quelques uns de ces slogans. On examinera leurs conditions d’émergence, leur fonctions (attractive et performative) et les pratiques qu’ils désignent, comme celles qu’ils dissimulent. Le séminaire se déroule sous la forme de treize séances de 2h par semaine au Semestre 1 suivies d’une journée complète de séminaire le samedi 7 janvier. Il requiert une participation active des étudiants, et des lectures à chaque séance (10 à 20 pages, souvent en anglais). All, The University of Michigan School of Information has a position opening at any rank for an "interpretivist" - partial description below, more available at the web link. The description is written broadly to encourage applications from people with qualitative/ethnographically oriented backgrounds such as science and technology studies, anthropology, sociology, HCI-CSCW, and of course iSchools. The deadline is SOON: November 1. I'm not on the search committee this year, but I'll be at Society for Social Studies of Science in Copenhagen if anyone would like to discuss the position and/or the School of Information. How do new disciplines develop in certain universities, not in others ? What factors shape the geography of science ? The history of computer science in French higher education suggests a model to describe this development and differenciation process. Computer science stemmed from local configurations associating a school of electrical engineering and a professor of numerical analysis. In the early 1950s, a few professors, who may be characterized as “science entrepreneurs”, created three-fold structures, associating courses in applied mathematics and programming, a computing facility and a research laboratory. This initiated a cumulative development process, attracting students, researchers, contracts, funding and powerful machines, and opening the field to novel applications or theoretical investigations. In other universities, these configurations were not completed – typically, they were limited to an assistant and a small computer, so that computing remained confined to technical training. In the 1960s, the pioneers became the leaders of the new informatics field, hold power positions in learned societies and in science policy committees, and controlled the definition of computer science curricula. As the computing institutes they had created reached considerable size, they began to spin off their junior professors toward other universities, thus still increasing their « radiance ». These centers, like Grenoble, Nancy or Toulouse, remain major academic centers in the discipline today.

Amazing computer history news: Antikythera divers to return to site for first survey ever!

Dear SIG Friends, Some of you may know about the Antikythera Mechanism, an ancient (2,000 years old) astronomical computer from Greece that is re-writing what we know about the state of ancient Greek technology. The skills displayed in the construction of the A.M. were not thought to have developed until 1,500 years later in Medieval Europe! Divers are now returning to the site (first discovery happened in 1901) with modern equipment. There will almost certainly be some amazing finds… and perhaps even another A.M.! SIGCIS & SHOT Meeting - please read if attending

Hello SIGCIS members, Many of you are now packing to leave for Copenhagen, or may already be in the air. So I wanted to make a couple of important reminders or announcements. 1. Usually I go through the SHOT provisional program posted online and compile a list of all papers and panels with material related to computing. Sadly this year Ive been unable to find any detailed program information on the meeting website at http://www.historyoftechnology.org/annual_meeting.html. You will find below this message the details of the three main conference panels organized or sponsored by SIGCIS though we still dont know the room assignments. 2. The SIGCIS lunch takes place 12:30 to 2:00 on Friday. Hopefully youve seen our previous announcements on this topic. The information on the SHOT website is still wrong in fact the lunch will be a tapas buffet with a cost of $25 per person, paid in advance when you pick up your materials at the meeting registration desk. The location is the rotunda by the Soldjberg Plads cafeteria. Unfortunately we were left off the SHOT registration form this year, so the process of establishing who is coming has been rather chaotic. We hope that at least a few additional spaces will be available for those who did not already reserve a spot via email to SHOT if you are interested then check this when you are at the registration desk. Bring plenty of cash for the book auction. 3. The SIGCIS workshop takes place all day on Sunday. We have now updated the program at http://www.sigcis.org/workshop12 with details about the post-workshop informal group dinner, which will take place shortly after the workshop at a nearby restaurant. Pay in cash directly at the restaurant. If you are coming to the workshop, PLEASE do you best to read the precirculated papers for the dissertations in progress session and/or the work in progress session. These sessions will just feature short (approx 5 minute) statements from the authors followed by discussion of the precirculated materials. So we need a critical mass of people in the audience who have read them. My apologies for not sending a reminder earlier. We usually do this when the collection is complete, and the sad truth is that for each session we only ever received two out of three papers. The four participants who did get their material to us for posting should not suffer for the sins of the other two, so lets make an effort to read their materials and give them a spirited discussion that makes their journey worthwhile.
