The School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin is hiring tenure-track faculty at all ranks - several openings. There is a long tradition of interest in history in this school. People who are interested in history of information science (e.g. information retrieval) or in history of the book, archives, libraries, museums, or usability as well as history of computing would be a better fit than those interested only in the history of computers or its business manifestations. People with an interest in some other field of information studies as well as history would also be attractive candidates. Information Science at Cornell (www.infosci.cornell.edu) is an interdisciplinary department within the Faculty of Computing and Information Science (www.cis.cornell.edu) bringing together from across the campus those interested in studying information systems in their social, cultural, economic, historical, legal, and political contexts. We are seeking to fill a tenure-track faculty position, broadly in the area of information policy. Areas of interest may include: - the sociology or anthropology of information policy; - contemporary debates (e.g., privacy, net neutrality, security); - the interactions and tensions between the legal and the technological; - the politics and/or economics of information institutions; - the implications of information policy for design or practice. Faculty Position in Digital Environments/Digital Humanities Rank: Assistant Professor The University of Michigan's School of Information (SI) seeks an outstanding tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor level to help establish a vigorous program of research and teaching in Digital Environments/Digital Humanities. New technologies and digital environments offer transformative opportunities for the humanities. At the same time, they bring unheralded challenges for accountability, authority, representation, intelligibility, and the assessment of value. Candidates for this position should have a demonstrated research record investigating topics of concern in the digital humanities. Potential areas of research include (but are not limited to) virtual collaboration in the humanities; design of interactive humanities-related media; credibility and authority of digital content; ethnography or history of digital culture; and curation of digital resources. This position is part of a Digital Environments faculty cluster aimed at transforming humanities scholarship and engaging faculty and students in new modes of research, teaching, and learning. The Digital Environments cluster represents a partnership between the School of Information; the departments of English Language and Literature and Communication Studies; and the Program in American Culture, each of which is hiring a new faculty member through independent searches. Thank you Bill. On the issue of Proceedings generally... is there any potential traction for having SHOT Proceedings, with presented papers in final publishable form, printed? AIMS AND SCOPE The computing sciences collect the most diverse complex of experts: philosophers, logicians, historians, mathematicians, computer scientists, programmers, engineers. The number of involved subjects grows accordingly: from foundational issues to their applications; from philosophical questions to problems of realizability and design of specifications; from theoretical studies of computational barriers to the relevance of machines for educational purposes. A historical awareness of the evolution of computing not only helps to clarify the complex structure of the computing sciences, but it also provides an insight in what computing was, is and maybe could be in the future. Philosophy, on the other hand, helps to tackle some of the fundamental problems of computing, going from the limits of the “mathematicizing power of homo sapiens”to the design of feasible and concrete models of interactive processes. The aim of this conference is to bring together these two streams: we are strongly convinced that an interplay between the researchers with an interest in the history and philosophy of computing can crucially add to the maturity of the field. We plan to have up to 30 contributed papers to be presented at the conference. We welcome contributions from logicians and philosophers or historians of science as well as from philosophically and/or historically aware computer scientists and mathematicians.
