TechRepublic: The evolution of the laptop computer

I'm a TechRepublic contributor. Emailed my editor there today and told her this made me CRINGE for being so error-ridden. I reminded her that I (literally) wrote the book on the evolution of mobile computing. No response yet... On 05/10/2017 09:27 PM, Joly MacFie wrote:

Oh? I only looked at the pretty pix :) What particularly got your goat? I was disappointed not to see the portable Commodore 64 in there. j On Wed, May 10, 2017 at 9:56 PM, Evan Koblentz <evan@vcfed.org> wrote:

Their use of "first" this or that, on almost every slide, and the fact that most of the things they called "first" aren't by a long shot. On 05/10/2017 10:33 PM, Joly MacFie wrote:

This feature is a good illustration of the vice-like grip that Firstism seems to have on the templating of this kind of material, particularly when we reach the final page, dealing with the Microsoft Surface. I think a lot of people who are very far from being contextual historians or STS scholars, but have a passing interest as mobile tech users or buyers, would agree that the later Surfaces and Surface Pros are interesting and influential in a way that the original Surface of 2013 really wasn't. The copy below the photo actually says this in so many words. The piece has "evolution" in its title, and the main thing you can do with the Surface story is to talk about iterative product development. Nonetheless, the photo is of the 2013 device. Why? Because it was "First"... JS On 11/05/2017 03:51, Evan Koblentz wrote:

Indeed it is a collection of "pretty pix". Yet a list of "firsts", whatever its historical interest may be, should at least be complete… There were several other attempts to market portable computers in the late 1970s, for instance R2E's Portal or the Swiss "Scrib" designed for journalists: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobst_Graphic_Scrib_Portable Best, Pierre Mounier-Kuhn ----- Mail original ----- De: "Evan Koblentz" <evan@vcfed.org> À: "members" <members@sigcis.org> Envoyé: Jeudi 11 Mai 2017 04:51:39 Objet: Re: [SIGCIS-Members] TechRepublic: The evolution of the laptop computer Their use of "first" this or that, on almost every slide, and the fact that most of the things they called "first" aren't by a long shot.
