On Bernard’s question, this from Barndon Butler from the University of Virginia who is a fair use/copyright expert:
Interesting! For an article, if the images serve the argument, I’d say rely on fair use, no worries. And it sounds like the odds are quite good that most of this stuff is in the public domain anyway. All the bombastic warnings demanding permission are surely unenforceable. I wouldn’t be daunted at all in using this stuff. The Authors Alliance just put out a nice new book on fair use for nonfiction authors that might be useful: https://www.authorsalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/AuthorsAllianceFa....

I couldn’t agree more. If we don’t assert our fair use rights as academics, we don’t have them. —Sarah --- S a r a h T. R o b e r t s, P h. D. I also completely agree. We need to be more "activist" about this. Here's a good reference, from the Collage Art Association: http://www.collegeart.org/pdf/fair-use/best-practices-fair-use-visual-arts.p... Matthew On Thu, Jul 12, 2018 at 6:09 PM Sarah T. Roberts <sarah.roberts@ucla.edu> wrote:

Here is another fair use best practices guide for research libraries, in which the aforementioned Brandon Butler was involved. I’ve learned that Stanford’s libraries use this as their guide in these matters. http://www.arl.org/storage/documents/publications/code-of-best-practices-fai... <http://www.arl.org/storage/documents/publications/code-of-best-practices-fair-use.pdf> +++++++++++++++ David C.
