Interesting! For an article, if the images serve the argument, I’d say rely on fair use, no worries. And it sounds like the odds are quite good that most of this stuff is in the public domain anyway. All the bombastic warnings demanding permission are surely unenforceable. I wouldn’t be daunted at all in using this stuff.
