Fwd: [CDCinfo] a question for computer historians regarding Netscape
Dear everyone, here’s an interesting question concerning the history of Netscape from my dear colleague Andreas Bernard. How did Andreessen and Clark (and probably Perkins?) celebrate the foundation of Mosaic Communications Corporation on April 4th 1994? Can someone help? ---jan Prof. Dr. Jan Müggenburg Assistant Professor for Media History and History of Science Leuphana University of Lueneburg Institute for Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media Universitätsallee 1, C5.324 Fon: 0049 4131 6771647 21335 Lueneburg E-Mail: jan.mueggenburg@leuphana.de

Dear all, I have a little question concerning a certain day in recent computer history. Has anybody done some research or does anybody know a source about April 4 1994, the day Andreessen and Clark founded Netscape? I would need some precise information on the circumstances of that day: when and where did they release the foundation, how did they celebrate it, what did they do in the evening of April 4 (e.g. a festive dinner, a big party)? It would be so great if somebody among us knew a source? I have researched the Net for hours and all I found was only some very general articles about the foundation, without any specific information. Thank you so much for your help. Best regards, Andreas

I'd look at Wired around that time. Off the top of my head, I think it might've been a Wired issue around May or June 1994, and a bigger story about Netscape around October 1994. I worked at Netscape in 1996, 1998–99, but that's worlds away from Mosaic Communications Corporation. :) Best wishes, Molly Steenson On Thu, Jan 14, 2021 at 4:45 AM Jan Müggenburg <jan.mueggenburg@leuphana.de> wrote:

Hi, When Artifacts launched in 2001, I had a celebration dinner at the legendary Buck's Diner in Woodside...I was told my table was "where Netscape was founded." I imagine there were meetings all over Silicon Valley, but this might back up that claim.. https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-the-silicon-valley-cafe-where-paypal-... ? Nice recall of memories, thanks! best wishes, Christine Artifacts: an Archaeologist's Year in Silicon Valley (MIT Press, 2001 & 2002) On Thu, 14 Jan 2021 at 14:36, Molly Wright Steenson <msteenso@andrew.cmu.edu> wrote:

It doesn’t answer directly your question, but here’s a tidbit somewhat related to it. At Veritas, we had retained a consultant, a kid named Brian Marick, one of the four who worked on NCSA Mosaic at Illinois (the two well-known ‘kids’ were Andreessen and Bina; the other two did not come west to do what became Netscape). Marick later attained some fame via doing the Agile Manifesto for software development. Through this connection, I had a possibility to invest slightly in Netscape, which (brilliantly) I declined. They went public on a Wednesday August 9th, and the stock went nuts. My wife, then at Apple, was incensed that I had not bought any, either before or at the opening. I mean, like INCENSED. We had a small home for sale in Palo Alto that week, and the deal failed when on the same Wednesday, our proposed buyer, who was the golf course manager for Shoreline, was indicted for cause. We were mostly packed and ready to move when this happened. That same Wednesday night, Jim Barksdale, who was the Netscape CEO at the IPO, bought a home down the block (1107 Hamilton Ave) with his new-found fortune, and he asked the owners to move out by the weekend, which caught them quite off-guard. Their realtor was our realtor; she said to them—“I know another home down the street (1140) that you’d love, and they could move quickly.” So, not yet knowing the backstory that the realtor knew, I met this couple at lunch the next day Thursday, in our home. The wife, without tipping their hand, said, “How soon could you move?” Gratuitously (I must have been on drugs), I leaned casually on the SubZero fridge, and said, for the right price, we could move this weekend.” She said, “Well, how about by tomorrow night, Friday?” I gulped, and said, “I need to call my wife,” who was working across town. When she answered, I said something like, “Hey, I just got a chance to get some Netscape money if we move quickly, what do you think?” She said “sure, glad to hear it.” When she later learned that “moving quickly” meant something different than just writing an investment check, she was not easily mollified. But we did move Friday, and Barksdale moved in down the street on Sunday or Monday. Later, I had an unusual opportunity, probably as ACM President at some untoward meeting—to introduce Mark Andreessen to Doug Englebart. I don’t recall how we happened to get together, but I clearly recall each of them exclaiming, almost simultaneously, that “I’m thrilled to meet you”. One was 25, the other 70. I wish I had a photo of that encounter. Dear All, Misti and Tom's suggestion of Lewis's *The New, New Thing* (and Wired) came to mind first. Some other possibilities are the *San Jose Mercury News*, which I think has a historical digitized database going back to the mid 1980s or so. (Perhaps the historical databases of the newspaper articles of the *WSJ *and *NYT *also) The trade publications *Computerworld *and *Datamation *might be possibilities. In addition to Lewis's book which is detailed, other journalists wrote books on the Browser Wars, might be something in them on this. University of Illinois has tremendous Archives/Special Collections, that might be a place to check with as well. I don't know what they have on Mosaic and the commercialization of the work done at Illinois by Andreeson, Clark and Co. at Netscape,, but perhaps they have something. At CBI we have grown our internet history archives greatly in recent years...Do not know what is in it but we have a bit on Netscape's early years in the Monash Collection and the Cortada Papers. (Have a ton on the other MOSAIC ;-) (Multi-User On-Line System for the Analysis of International Computing, an interdisciplinary collaborative effort to study computing/CS in the USSR, China, etc.), but relatively little on Mosaic browser and Netscape (other than one is below) at CBI. I have researched the Net for hours and all I found was only some very general articles about the foundation, without any specific information. Thank you so much for your help. Best regards, Andreas

Jan, I don't think there was a celebration. According to "Netscape Time", page 76, on that same day (which was just after the famous Clark/Andreesen visit to Champaign-Urbana), Clark got the news that a friend and business partner had committed suicide. So not a time for celebration. Founding an empty company was just a routine administrative act anyway. They didn't really start hiring staff and doing work until May. Dear all, I have a little question concerning a certain day in recent computer history. Has anybody done some research or does anybody know a source about April 4 1994, the day Andreessen and Clark founded Netscape? I'd kinda forgotten that factoid. The VC who committed suicide wasn't just a friend, it was Glenn Mueller who had funded Clark to do Silicon Graphics, and made a bazillion dollars in the process. But Mueller et al had cut deals as SGI grew, that Clark felt minimized his own fortune from SGI, and when it came time to seek investors, Clark pointedly told Mueller to go pound sand, and he gave the deal to John Doerr at Kleiner-Perkins as I recall the story. Glenn, deeply despondent about this (and some other things), shot himself while cruising on his ship in Baja California. The Archives Center at the National Museum of American History has an oral history interview with Marc Andreeson, conducted in 1995. The interview was recorded on video and cassette tapes. Unfortunately a transcript of the interview isn't available. I'm not sure if there is mention of what happened on that day. Here is the finding aid for this oral history collection: https://sirismm.si.edu/EADpdfs/NMAH.AC.1303.pdf. Very sad about Glenn Mueller. I didn't know that part of the story either. Chuck, To be very clear, that article (for which many thanks) says: "Clark says that Mueller committed suicide a full week after the two spoke, not immediately, as suggested in the book" (where "the book" is "The New New Thing"). In "Netscape Time" Clark is very explicit that the suicide was the same day that Mosaic Communications Corporation was officially founded. Clark wrote that the phone call from Mueller was "just before I left for Illinois with Marc" which would indeed have been about a week earlier. "Netscape Time" doesn't give the exact date, however, just indicating "the last week of March" (page 52). Oh, by the way, I just noticed that "Netscape Time" has a chapter title "Operation Pied Piper". Fans of "Silicon Valley" on TV please note.

I didn't realize it was the same day--I thought there was a week or two lagtime

Follow-up re the Mueller segment, Clark commenting on Lewis’ book, the NEW New Thing, about Clark https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Lewis-on-the-Trail-of-Clark-Aut... <https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Lewis-on-the-Trail-of-Clark-Author-catches-up-2900756.php>
It was indeed a week later, not ‘on the day’ when Mueller cashed it in. “"It's very difficult to see myself in print," says Clark, 55. "It's not a flattering portrayal, but I suppose it's balanced and reasonably fair. I think Michael is an incredibly funny, talented person. He is so bloody observant that you can't spend time with him and hide who you are. I wasn't prepared for that."
However, he says Lewis took a bit of artistic license to spin his yarn. For example, Clark says that Mueller committed suicide a full week after the two spoke, not immediately, as suggested in the book. Clark adds that his own personality came across "as a little greedy, and I never envisioned myself that way because I've shared a lot with the others in all the companies I've been involved with. One of my priorities was to make sure engineers and others were owners of these companies."
