A few days ago during this discussion, I mentioned the four pages of Daylight's interview of Knuth (The 88 page booklet titled _The Essential Knuth_) where they discuss the topic of our current discussion thread. the interview. (From my point of view, this is a very interesting booklet. Don't skip reading it just because you don't agree with Knuth's personal view as stated in these four pages.)
