After I heard the news I went to the Turing Award lectures that he and Ken Thompson gave-they're probably on-line but I have them in the CACM 27 (August 1984), 757-763. The lecture by Ritchie, on the role of Bell Labs and its uncertain future after it was broken up (the year before) is very touching. Looking back, we see that the breakup of AT&T led to the current world of telecommunications & computing intertwined, but at what cost? Thompson's lecture tells you how to write a Trojan Horse program! Paul E.
