I'm interested in the cultural history of communications technology in the late 20th century, and especially in the political ideologies of democracy and technocracy associated with computers, networks, and video technology. My current research focuses on technological utopianism in the countercultural video communities of the 1970s. These actors developed their identities and politics around video cameras rather than computers, but had much in common with early computer hobbyists and referred to computers in their writings and videos.
