Joy — I appreciate your bravery in making public the full story of your harassment, both online and in your department. I am sorry you had to endure so much mistreatment at the hands of those you had every right to assume were colleagues and professionals. It is an important reminder to us all that we need to be constantly vigilant, even within our supposedly enlightened academic communities, against perpetuating or allowing to be perpetuated inequity and injustice. It was encouraging to see how SIGCIS responded and modified its policies and practices to make the abuse of our list and collective trust less possible, but also a reminder of how few of the organizations and institutions I belong to have such policies in place. I am convicted of my own need to be proactive in this regard.
I am carrying along my recently arrived copy of your new book as I travel, and look forward to having the time to read it, and the opportunity to engage in a productive conversation about your contribution to our scholarly community!
