I'm very excited to announce the publication of my book Archaeologies of Touch: Interfacing with Haptics from Electricity to Computing. The book will hopefully be of interest to members of this list, as it provides a macrohistorical framework for the emergence of Computer Haptics, moving forward from electrical experiments in the 1700s to psychophysics in the 1800s, and then engaging with the design of tactile communication systems in the middle decades of the twentieth century. The final two chapters address the more recent history of haptics, tracing the development of Computer Haptics as a dedicated & formalized field of study from the 1970s on.
