The compendium <i>Faster Than Thought: A Symposium on Digital Computing Machines</i>, BV Bowden, ed. first published in 1953 is valuable. I've also found some good info both pre- and post-1965 in
<i>Datamation</i> that address many of the real and perceived problems of the times. And even though published at the end of the 1960s, Jean Sammet's
<i>Programming Languages</i> has some excellent coverage of pre-1965 technologies and activities.<br>
