CALL FOR PAPERS FOR SPECIAL SESSION ON
History of Telecommunications
Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 13:15 -18:00
Co-Chairs: Prof. Mischa Schwartz & Dr. Jacob Baal-Schem
The 2008 IEEE Global Communications Conference (IEEE GLOBECOM 2008) will
be held in New Orleans, LA, USA, from 30 November through 4 December,
2008, in conjunction with the World Telecommunications Congress. The
Conference will feature 11 Symposia along with Tutorials, Workshops, a
Design and Developers Forum, and the EXPO.
A Special Session will be devoted to the History of Telecommunications.
The Session will include Keynotes and papers on the History of important
technical developments (e.g. DSL).
A Panel of Experts will discuss the subject: “Who Invented Radio?”
(Marconi vs. Popov vs. Lodge-Branly).
Prospective authors and contributors are invited to submit original
papers. Please visit http://www.ieee-globecom.org/2008 for details and
submission information. Only timely submissions through EDAS at
http://edas.info will be accepted. Deadline: March 15, 2008 .
Background:
· Many historical developments occurred in Telecommunications during
recent centuries and it is important to provide a critical discussion of
these technological events to the professional audience. From the
inventions of the telephone and radio, through the development of
television and of digital means of transmission of information – all
these subjects need historical coverage and merit professional discussions.
· The discussion among countries, regarding “The father of Radio” will
be a challenging subject both for the Panel members who will represent
different views, and for the audience participating in the discussion.
· The IEEE Communications Society has recently established a
“Communications History” standing committee and this session is the
launching event of the activities of the Committee.
