Follow-up re the Mueller segment, Clark commenting on Lewis’ book, the NEW New Thing,  about Clark

 https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Lewis-on-the-Trail-of-Clark-Author-catches-up-2900756.php

It was indeed a week later, not ‘on the day’ when Mueller cashed it in.  “"It's very difficult to see myself in print," says Clark, 55. "It's not a flattering portrayal, but I suppose it's balanced and reasonably fair. I think Michael is an incredibly funny, talented person. He is so bloody observant that you can't spend time with him and hide who you are. I wasn't prepared for that."

However, he says Lewis took a bit of artistic license to spin his yarn. For example, Clark says that Mueller committed suicide a full week after the two spoke, not immediately, as suggested in the book. Clark adds that his own personality came across "as a little greedy, and I never envisioned myself that way because I've shared a lot with the others in all the companies I've been involved with. One of my priorities was to make sure engineers and others were owners of these companies."

The Archives Center at the National Museum of American History has an oral history interview with Marc Andreeson, conducted in 1995. The interview was recorded on video and cassette tapes. Unfortunately a transcript of the interview isn't available. I'm not sure if there is mention of what happened on that day. Here is the finding aid for this oral history collection: https://sirismm.si.edu/EADpdfs/NMAH.AC.1303.pdf.

Very sad about Glenn Mueller. I didn't know that part of the story either.

Be well,

External Email - Exercise Caution

I'd kinda forgotten that factoid. The VC who committed suicide wasn't just a friend, it was Glenn Mueller who had funded Clark to do Silicon Graphics, and made a bazillion dollars in the process. But Mueller et al had cut deals as SGI grew, that Clark felt minimized his own fortune from SGI, and when it came time to seek investors, Clark pointedly told Mueller to go pound sand, and he gave the deal to John Doerr at Kleiner-Perkins as I recall the story. Glenn, deeply despondent about this (and some other things), shot himself while cruising on his ship in Baja California. I didn't realize it was the same day--I thought there was a week or two lagtime

    Jan,

I don't think there was a celebration. According to "Netscape Time", page 76, on that same day (which was just after the famous Clark/Andreesen visit to Champaign-Urbana), Clark got the news that a friend and business partner had committed suicide. So not a time for celebration. Founding an empty company was just a routine administrative act anyway. They didn't really start hiring staff and doing work until May.

Has anybody done some research or does anybody know a source about April 4 1994, the day Andreessen and Clark founded Netscape?
