[SIGCIS-Members] What happened on the list last year

Dear Joy and listserv members,
Joy’s powerful post saddens and angers me. I honor her courage for sharing her horrible, compounded experiences. I am particularly outraged at the waste of her time and energy when she could and should be doing productive work. I worry about the damage to her health and well-being caused by the perpetrators.

Not that an online tool is any kind of redress to Joy’s situation, but I would remind you all of the Center for Solutions to Online Violence on the FemTechNet website. It was created in 2015, and I still find it useful.

Take care, Sharon Irish

Dear Joy,

I'm appalled by what you have been through and like Miriam and others wish you support and community. Thank you for writing this and giving your incredible talk at 4S in Boston. I like that *you* have fired Michigan State and given all of us the opportunity to learn from "utter institutional failure." I've shared it with my colleagues and students so that we can all bear witness to your amazing courage and your -- and all of our -- struggle.

Dear Joy,

Thank you for sharing this devastating account of your experiences with harassment. Your story is so important to me and to other women in the academy, for whom experiences like these are familiar. Your intertwined stories about MSU and Dear demonstrate the systemic nature of harassment and the multiple ways it plays out institutionally and individually. I wish you continued courage, community, and solidarity as you navigate the fallout of all of this. (And I hope that MSU received some renewed scrutiny and accountability as a result.)

Many congratulations on your book and your outstanding contributions to the field.

Joy (and all)--

I am appalled by what you've been through and I want to commend you on your honesty and strength. As Barbara notes, accounts like this are a critical part of our history as a field, as a discipline, and as a (highly imperfect) knowledge-producing endeavor. Thank you for all the work you have done, including your pathbreaking book. I am sorry we couldn't make things work out better. But I look forward to your future work--whatever form that may take--because you have an insightful, courageous voice, and the way you use it enriches us all.

Thank you.

Dear Joy,

Thank you for writing out this important piece of professional and institutional history, painful though it must be to relive these experiences and to share them. It is a valuable read because of its thoughtful exploration of the context and implications of the very disturbing events in your recent professional life.

Sending warmest regards and support, Barbara

Hello SIGCIS Colleagues,

First, thank you for your many on- and off-list messages of congratulations and support for my book. I deeply appreciate them, especially in the context of what I'm about to share.

Those of you who were on the list last spring saw my work savaged by a man named Brian Dear. Even then, I received on- and off-list messages of support for my scholarship. But what happened publicly was only one piece of a terrible, terrible year.

SIGCIS as an organization did the right thing, and for that, I'm grateful.
