In Severo Ornstein's wonderful memoir, Computing in the Middle Ages: A View from the Trenches, Severo tells about Howie Briscoe, who had worked on Whirlwind computer, teaching him (Severo) to program for Whirlwind all on paper and nowhere near the Whirlwind computer. Eventualy Severo joined the Whirlwind project.
