One often hears calls for professionals/scientists/technologists/etc. to 
engage the public in scientific and technical conversations.  If answers to 
these calls are to be regarded as being anything more than lightly disguised 
pleas for a bigger helping of government guano, then it seems to me that 
said professionals/scientists/technologists/etc. have to engage the public 
in less self-serving situations; for example, when it is being herded down a 
dark alley.
